What's the secret to growing Bougainvilleas?

Bougainvilleas and me.

I have a lot to learn, but I have learned so much. I became obsessed with Bougainvilleas many years ago. Their beauty and mystery drew me in. I've never had much luck with growing these plants. They were coy to bloom, stubborn and thorny. After losing many Bougies, I eventually realized it would take more than just luck to grow these magnificent plants. I began this Bougainvillea blog and off I went into the garden to try and figure out the secret to get these beauties to form bountiful bracts. I can now say that I am learning! I am so excited, I'm beginning to feel the rythm of these plants. However, I do have much more to learn. I look forward to each and every spring that I can learn more about Bougainvilleas and their secrets.

What's Blooming?

May, 2026

I enjoy crafting sometimes so I decided to make a Bougainvillea wreath this year. I made this wreath with a wire frame and some artificial bougainvilleas fom Walmart. I threw in some extra flowers and butterflies from the Dollar Tree. I think it turned out nice, I'm pleased with it. It makes me happy.

Bougainvilleas in the spring.

March, 2026

The Bougainvilleas made it through the winter. I'm so happy, they even began to bloom in the greenhouse in early March. I didn't lose any this year, it turned out so much better than the year before. The ones I have in the ground are all beginning to grow as well. And to my surprise, I had left a bunch of long cut Bougainvillea stems in a glass jar with water and many of those began to grow leaves and bracts. I've transplanted them to soil and hope they survive the transplant. I'm looking forward to this spring.

Can Bougainvilleas Grow in Texas?

I live in Central Texas and the answer is yes, absolutely yes. Bougainvilleas can definitely grow, thrive and survive in Texas. I've seen many Bougainvilleas growing in South Texas. Below is a huge one behind a restaurant. Bougainvilleas seem to do very well in South Texas. They come back year after year if their roots are not damaged during one of the winter freezes. I enjoy watching the plants at the mission church get cut back in the winter and then come back to a huge display of colorful bracts in the spring. They'll need your care, but you can grow happy Bougainvilleas in Texas.
